Sheung Wan Evolution - As an urban hub where East meets West, Sheung Wan has seen gentrification bring an influx of expat residents, restaurants, cafes, and bars, alongside a young, modern vibe mixed with traditional elements. Located on Bonham Strand West—a 180-year-old street named after George Bonham, Hong Kong’s 4th governor—the area is known for its dried seafood and Chinese medicine shops, a reminder of its historical role as a bustling trade center.
Design Vision and Strategy
Conceptual Approach - PLACE Developments offered strategic advisory expertise to guide the project’s design positioning, while PLACE Architects led the design to transform Strand 71, a 15-storey commercial building at the end of Bonham Strand West in Sheung Wan. Together, our focus was on integrating contemporary design with the neighborhood’s heritage, balancing modernity and tradition.
Key Design Elements
Street Activation - PLACE Developments advised on enhancing the building’s urban presence, with PLACE Architects designing enlarged double-glazed windows to illuminate spaces and provide unobstructed views of an urban park, blending modern aesthetics with Sheung Wan’s traditional context.
Permeable Entrance Lobby - PD guided the strategic integration of hospitality elements, while PA crafted a welcoming entrance with subtle textures, bronze accents, and dark metallic finishes, creating an exclusive and hospitable arrival experience.
Adaptive Reuse Vision - This approach, driven by PD’s market-responsive insights and PA’s adaptive design, preserved Sheung Wan’s historical essence while supporting its evolution as a vibrant, modern district.
Outcome
The collaborative refurbishment delivered a fully transformed building that sits comfortably within its urban fabric, celebrating both the new and old, modern and traditional.
